Points, miles and more…Today & Yesterday: A Look at Hotel Loyalty ProgramsToday, frequent flyer programs and other loyalty programs are everywhere. From grocery store discount programs to airline travel miles, recognition and reward programs are now used in most consumer-based industries and available in every region of the globe. In the beginning, hotels were partners with airline programs. As the industry grew, hotels decided to launch their own frequent stay program. Holiday Inn was the first hotel brand to launch its own program in early 1983. Marriott followed with its program later in the same year. Soon thereafter, other hotel brands developed and launched their own frequent-stay programs. Earning and RedeemingIn 2006, loyalty programs are now core differentiators for hotels. Most hotels offer a loyalty program and some of the larger hotel brands offer a loyalty program within their entire brand family. For example, Carlson Hotels Worldwide offers Gold Points Plus® through Regent International Hotels, Radisson Hotels & Resorts, Park Plaza Hotels, Country Inns & Suites by Carlson and Park Inn. Most loyalty programs are not interchangeable outside of the “brand family”. Some programs have creative redemption offers where loyalty members can redeem their points for merchandise or travel miles. In all cases, points or miles earned at one hotel brand cannot be redeemed at another hotel brand. For example, guests who earn points at a Radisson hotel cannot redeem these points at a Marriott hotel.
